What we collect when you plan a trip
To generate an itinerary, SafarBudget sends the details you enter — origin, destination, travel dates, budget, party size, travel mode and stay preference — to our server, which passes them to Google's Gemini AI to produce the plan. We do not ask for your name, email, phone number or payment details to generate a plan, and we don't require you to create an account. (Confirming a trip afterwards is a separate, optional step that does ask for a name and a phone number — see below.)
When you ask us to book a trip
A plan page has an optional "Book this trip" step. It is the only place on SafarBudget that asks for your name and mobile number, it is never required to use the planner, and nothing on it is pre-filled or pre-ticked.
If you complete it, we do not transmit anything ourselves. We open WhatsApp on your device with a message already written out — your name, your mobile number, the trip details and cost estimates from the plan you were looking at, a booking reference, and whether you asked for travel insurance — addressed to SafarBudget. Nothing reaches us until you press send in WhatsApp yourself. If you close WhatsApp without sending, we never receive it and no record of it exists.
When you do send it, we use those details for one purpose: passing them to a partner travel agency so they can contact you about booking that trip. That is what the consent checkbox on the form asks for, and we do not use the number for marketing, newsletters or any other trip. To have your details removed after you've sent them, message or email us using the contact details at the bottom of this page and we'll delete them.
What stays on your device
Trips, traveller names, and expenses you log for splitting costs are stored in your browser's or app's local storage, on your own device. We do not receive or store this data on our servers, and we can't see it, recover it if you clear your browser data, or sync it between your devices.
Group votes work the same way. A vote link carries the trip options and the first names people type when they vote inside the link itself — in the part after the "#", which browsers never send to any server. You share it yourself, on WhatsApp or anywhere else, and each phone that opens it keeps its own copy to add up the votes. SafarBudget never receives or stores the votes or the names.
Trip funds — the trip, its cost and what you've put aside — are kept in your browser too. Reminders are added by you, to your own calendar; we never see them.
Hosting logs
Like any website, our hosting provider (Vercel) processes standard server logs (such as IP address and request timing) to run and secure the service. We do not currently use any third-party analytics or advertising trackers on SafarBudget.
What we don't do
We do not sell your data. We do not share the details of a trip you plan with anyone beyond what's needed to generate the itinerary (our AI provider, as described above) — the single exception being a trip you explicitly confirm, which goes to a partner travel agency only because you ticked the box asking us to, and only after you sent it to us yourself.
Children's privacy
SafarBudget is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
